Why the Far-Off Dry Period May Hold the Key to Better Colostrum

For many years, transition cow management has focused heavily on the close-up period immediately before calving. However, emerging research into the far-off dry period and colostrum production suggests that some of the most important influences on colostrum yield may occur much earlier.

Recent work investigating mammary gland metabolism has provided new insight into how the udder prepares for the next lactation and why successful dry-off management may be more important than previously recognised.

How the Mammary Gland Changes During the Far-Off Dry Period

Researchers studying Holstein cows from dry-off through to early lactation found that the mammary gland enters a low-metabolic, non-secretory state approximately four to six weeks before calving. During this phase, mammary blood flow, glucose uptake and acetate uptake reach their lowest levels.

At first glance, this reduction in activity might appear undesirable. However, the evidence suggests the opposite.

Rather than being inactive, the mammary gland appears to be undergoing a period of essential regeneration. Existing mammary cells are replaced, tissue is remodelled and the foundation for future colostrum and milk production is established. This period of recovery allows the udder to prepare for the demands of the next lactation.

The researchers observed that mammary activity begins to increase again approximately two weeks before calving. Nutrient uptake accelerates rapidly as the cow approaches parturition and the onset of milk production.

Why Mammary Rest May Improve Colostrum Yield

One of the most interesting findings from the study was that cows exhibiting greater mammary activity during the far-off dry period tended to produce less colostrum at calving.

This suggests that achieving a true non-secretory state may be more important than maintaining high levels of mammary activity throughout the dry period. In practical terms, successful dry-off management may play a critical role in supporting future colostrum production.

The findings challenge the assumption that more activity is always better. Instead, allowing the mammary gland sufficient opportunity to rest and regenerate may improve its ability to perform when colostrum production begins.

Colostrum Development Begins Weeks Before Calving

This concept is supported by the biology of colostrogenesis. The production of colostrum does not occur solely in the days immediately before calving. The transfer of immunoglobulins and accumulation of bioactive compounds begins several weeks before parturition.

As a result, events occurring during the far-off dry period may influence the quantity and quality of colostrum available at calving.

Evidence from commercial dairy herds also supports the importance of this period. Research conducted in Québec found that pre-calving nutrition and management factors explained a significant proportion of the variation observed in both colostrum yield and quality. The same study reported that cows with longer dry periods tended to produce greater volumes of colostrum.
